With the rainy season approaching, the County Department of Public Works (DPW) is again giving free sandbags to people in unincorporated communities to protect their homes, neighborhoods and streets from damaging mud and debris flows, flooding and erosion.
DPW will provide free bags and the sand to fill them at seven fire stations in the unincorporated county (and bags only at an eighth station).
“This is a service that our Public Works Department makes available to our citizens in the unincorporated areas,” said County Board of Supervisors Chairman Bill Horn. “We encourage everyone to protect their property, public infrastructure and the environment from storm water damage by taking advantage of this free program.”
San Diego County is dry most of the year and heavy rains can cause severe soil erosion, especially in areas not covered by lawns, trees, shrubs and plants. Water runoff, and especially mud and debris flows, can damage individual homes and properties and create even wider destruction by flooding roadways and clogging storm drains and culverts.
To get free sandbags, residents who live in unincorporated areas of the County just need to bring their own shovel to one of the following locations:
- Alpine, Alpine Fire Protection District, Station 17, 1364 Tavern Road (BAGS ONLY).
- Bonita, Bonita/Sunnyside Fire Department, 4900 Bonita Road. Dulzura,
- Cal Fire Station 30, 17304 Highway 94.
- Fallbrook, North County Fire Protection District, Station 4: 4375 Pala Mesa Drive.
- Julian, Cal Fire Station 50: 1587 Highway 78.
- Pauma Valley-Rincon, Cal Fire Station 70: 16971 Highway 76.
- Ramona, Cal Fire Mount Woodson Station: 16310 Highway 67.
- Valley Center, Cal Fire Station 73: 28205 N. Lake Wohlford Road.
