Financial Investing Made Simple

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Dave Kershberg doesn’t believe financial planning is just for the rich. He doesn’t think it has to be complex either. Just to prove his point he is giving a free presentation at the County library in La Mesa Saturday.

“Investing is for anybody who has a financial goal,” said Kershberg adding, a financial goal can be retirement planning, paying for their education or something as simple as saving for a vacation.

His presentation, “Grow Your Money: Easy Investing for Everyone” covers the basics of investments and “how inflation can eat away at people’s money and how investing is the only way to conquer that.”

Kershberg said he wants people to know that investing is about growth over time and people can learn simple investing techniques like looking to index funds. It’s not about drowning in research before investing either because a lot of people don’t have time to do that sort of planning, he added.

Although Kershberg has a graduate degree in financial planning, he works as an administration manager for Preferred Employers Insurance Company, which provides workers’ compensation insurance for California businesses. Kershberg volunteers to give financial planning presentations in several places including West Hills High School where he has presented a Junior Achievement Personal Finance curriculum to more than 500 seniors.

For some people, seeing a lot of figures can be overwhelming –but they will have nothing to fear here. Kershberg said his presentation will be all graphical – no numbers at all — and will be free of technical financial jargon too. While his presentation is based on real numbers, he’s purposely not including them to make it less complex. All his numbers and supporting materials will be available as handouts for anyone who is interested.

“These tools are not being taught and I think that people should be able to do this themselves,” Kershberg said. “My goal is just to give people knowledge to help themselves financially.”

It’s not expensive to learn about investing. All of the reading materials Kershberg uses to guide him in his personal investing are books that can be found at a public library.

Kershberg’s presentation will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 29 at the La Mesa Library, 8074 Allison Ave.
