The joy of the holidays came early for 125 foster youth and families who received a free refurbished laptop this month during an annual laptop giveaway event.
For the 24th year in a row, the County of San Diego and the Futures Foundation teamed up to provide foster youth with laptops that will help them keep pace in a technology driven world and support their educational needs.
The laptops are all previously owned and used by the County. Instead of sending the laptops to recycling, they are cleared, reset, and refurbished by the Futures Foundation. Then, based on need and eligibility, the County’s Child and Family Well Being Department selects the youths and families who get to take one home.
Technology is a critical tool in the educational success of all students. Foster youth often don’t have the same resources as other students and run the risk of falling behind in school.
Since the program began, more than 4,500 computers have been distributed to foster youth and foster families.
