In San Diego County, 1,074 children are currently in out-of-home care, and nearly half—531—are living with relatives. Placing children with family members is the County’s preferred option. Research shows foster youth who live with family experience greater stability, less trauma, have stronger long-term behavioral and mental health outcomes, and higher academic achievements. The joy of the holidays came early for 125 foster youth and families who received a free refurbished laptop this month during an annual laptop giveaway event. For the 24th year in a row, the County of San Diego and the Futures Foundation teamed up to provide foster youth with laptops that will help them keep pace in a technology driven world and support their educational needs.
