Potrero residents are invited to register for an emergency preparedness-themed neighborhood block party to build a more resilient community in the event of a disaster.
The family-friendly event will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24 at the Potrero Branch Library. It is hosted by San Diego County Fire Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and the San Diego County Library branch in Potrero.
“Rural communities like Potrero often have fewer resources but face just as many risks,” said Teresa Greenhalgh, San Diego County Fire CERT Coordinator. “Events like this ensure that families here have the same access to life-saving information as those in larger cities.”
A LISTOS California support grant is funding the block party and providing resources to connect people and help prepare them for a disaster because strong communities start with prepared neighbors. Those attending will receive a free toolkit, get to participate in fun activities and games and maybe win prizes.
Community members will test their emergency preparedness knowledge in games like: The Price of Preparedness, similar to “The Price is Right,” but contestants guess the price of five items included in a starter Go-Kit. Whoever guesses closest to the actual price, wins the bag with all the items; In Two Truths & a Lie, players form teams and pick out the lie, or wrong answer, about eight disasters; and finally a team scavenger hunt will have neighbors figure out who has list items, or resources, and ultimately which neighbors can help and which ones need assistance in a disaster.
Residents can also play Emergency Preparedness Bingo and compete to pack a bag in 15 seconds with a CERT demonstration kit.
Registration for Potrero community members is free but required so that enough materials will be available. Call or text (619) 857-8050 or email: Teresa.Greenhalgh@sdcounty.ca.gov
