Get tested.

This is what national and local health officials want people to do in order to prevent the spread of HIV.

To do that, the County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) and its many partners are offering free, confidential HIV testing throughout the region. The free testing is part of National HIV Testing Week in San Diego County, which will take place June 21-27.

“Getting tested is extremely important because one in 10 people who are infected with HIV are not aware of it,” said Patrick Loose, chief of the HHSA HIV, STD and Hepatitis Branch. “Everyone 18 and over who is having non-monogamous sexual relations should get tested, whether they think they are at risk or not.”

The earlier we detect HIV, the more treatment options there are and the better the outcome is going to be.

Dr. Wilma Wooten, County Public Health Officer

Every week, 10 people are diagnosed with HIV or AIDS in the San Diego region. Since the beginning of the AIDS epidemic in the early 1980s, about 15,000 San Diego County residents have been diagnosed with AIDS. Since 2006, more than 5,400 residents have been diagnosed with HIV disease.

Advances in medication and treatment have helped people with AIDS to live longer, healthier lives. Of the individuals diagnosed with AIDS in San Diego County, 7,221 are currently alive.

“The earlier we detect HIV, the more treatment options there are and the better the outcome is going to be,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “People should get tested regardless of who their sexual partner is.”

The free HIV testing is part of Live Well San Diego, the County’s vision of healthy, safe and thriving residents and communities.
