The spill, which was caused by a broken pipe, started at 7:30 p.m. Monday night and is ongoing.

Based on the estimated flow volume of approximately 18 gallons per second, approximately one million gallons has spilled to the Playas de Tijuana shoreline which is approximately three-quarters of a mile south of the International Border.   Signs warning of sewage contamination are posted at the beach-line from the U.S.-Mexico Border to the north end of Imperial Beach and will remain in place until samples confirm the water is safe for recreational use.
