Contamination warning signs are posted at beaches around San Elijo Lagoon following a sewage spill.

A main broke at a pump station on Manchester Avenue at Via Pico shortly before noon Wednesday.   An estimated 1,500 gallons of sewage flowed into the San Elijo Lagoon.  City of Encinitas crews are working to control the release.

Beaches 100 feet north and south of the lagoon’s outfall into the ocean are closed for water contact.  Signs are also posted at major access points within the lagoon.  The closures will remain in place until testing shows they are safe.
