With New Rain on the Way, Sandbags Still Available

Reading Time: 3 minutes

With forecasters predicting more heavy rains across San Diego County Monday and Tuesday, the County and CAL FIRE continue to offer free sand and bags to people in unincorporated communities.

Residents in the incorporated cities can find where to get sandbags in their cities on Alertsandiego.org.

Last week’s historic rains caused flood damage to many homes and businesses, increasing the potential for new flooding if rains are heavy again this week.

Rain can cause flooding and erosion, particularly in areas that are not covered by plants, landscaping, grass and trees. Rain runoff can sweep topsoil, mud, plant material and debris off land and downstream where it can damage homes, clog culverts and storm drains, and flood and damage roadways.

Some fire stations have sand and bags. Others have bags alone. Some stations may have a limited supply. The lists of stations where residents in unincorporated communities can get them are listed below.

People should call ahead to double-check availability and remember to bring a shovel to fill the bags.
