Public Invited to Tour Kearny Mesa Juvenile Hall

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Juvenile Hall in Kearny Mesa will once again open its doors to the public on Saturday, May 16.

Get a behind-the-scenes look during one of the 45-60 minute tours that will be continuously offered from 9 a.m. through 1 p.m. that day. Tours will be available in both English and Spanish, and youth can receive community service credit for their visit.

The annual open house usually attracts thousands of visitors including families and student groups.

Each tour begins in an actual juvenile courtroom where a judge would order a youth detained. Visitors will then walk through a back door to the court holding area. From there, they will get a look at the actual living quarters where youth remain until released.

Visitors see the sleeping rooms, communal uniforms and showers and learn about the daily schedule in juvenile hall.

Probation groups and community partners also host booths outside to highlight positive resources for young people.

The event will take place at the Kearny Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility. The entrance to the tour will be at the nearby Juvenile Court, located at 2851 Meadow Lark Drive, San Diego 92123 near Children’s Hospital.  No backpacks, purses, cameras or gum are allowed. For more information, the public can call (858) 694-4500. No reservations are required.
