Cool Zones Help Seniors, Disabled Beat the Heat

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Summer is officially here, and so is one of San Diego County’s summer traditions: the County’s Cool Zones are now open.

Cool Zones are designated air-condition buildings easily identifiable by a light blue Polar Bear Cool Zone logo. There are more than 100 locations throughout San Diego County in locations such as libraries, malls and senior centers.

The program, established by San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob, has been helping seniors and persons with disabilities beat the heat since 2001. The program is a partnership with SDG&E.

Low-income, homebound seniors and disabled persons can request a free electric fan if they are unable to go to Cool Zone site. The program also offers bus passes to qualified individuals in certain zip codes to help them get to designated Cool Zones.

This year the Cool Zone program will operate from June 22 to October 15.
