For years, a freeway underpass in unincorporated East County has been home to dozens of people experiencing homelessness. Now, thanks to outreach lead by the County’s Department of Homeless Solutions and Equitable Communities, and in collaboration with multiple agencies, organizations, community partners and other county departments, the former large encampment area is being transformed.

The primary support arch for the new Midway District Bridge Shelter was ceremonially raised and fixed in place this morning. Set to serve up to 150 San Diegans experiencing homelessness when it opens, the shelter will offer on-site behavioral health services 24-hours a day, seven days a week.
